How does it actually work? Do I need to install something?

SpellStream runs as a lightweight menu bar app on macOS. Once installed, just hit your hotkey (customizable) and start speaking in any text field - VS Code, Slack, Chrome, anywhere. Your words appear instantly as you speak. No copy-pasting, no app switching.

Why only $20? What's the catch?

No catch. We believe great tools should be accessible. You pay once and own it forever. Cloud transcription (optional) is pay-as-you-go through your own Deepgram API key - typically under $1 for 2 hours of dictation. We make money on volume, not subscriptions.

Is my data private? Where does my audio go?

In Local Mode, your audio never leaves your device - 100% offline processing. In Cloud Mode, audio is sent directly to Deepgram's servers (industry-leading security, SOC 2 Type 2 certified) and immediately deleted after transcription. We never store, log, or have access to your audio or transcripts.

How accurate is it with technical terms and code?

Cloud Mode (Deepgram) handles technical vocabulary exceptionally well - function names, programming terms, even variable names like 'getString' or 'userData'. It learns from context. Local Mode is good for general dictation but Cloud Mode is recommended for heavy technical work.

How is this different from built-in dictation on Mac/Windows?

Night and day. Built-in dictation gives you raw, unformatted text with all your "ums" and pauses. SpellStream automatically adds punctuation, removes filler words, formats lists, and handles technical writing. Plus it works consistently across all apps without compatibility issues.

Why not just use free open-source voice tools like Whisper?

You absolutely can use free local options - they're great for basic transcription. But here's the difference: Cloud models like Deepgram are miles ahead in accuracy, especially for professional use. They handle background noise better, understand context, format intelligently, and nail technical terms. If you want to spend time creating instead of editing transcriptions, the cloud model pays for itself. Think of it as the difference between a phone camera and a DSLR - both take pictures, but professionals use the right tool for the job.

What languages does it support?

Cloud Mode supports 30+ languages including English, Spanish, French, German, Japanese, and Mandarin with excellent accuracy. Local Mode currently supports English, Spanish, and French, with more languages coming in updates.
